The New Album from Gwendolyn Fitz is a Must-Listen

Gwendolyn Fitz is a multi-talented artist from New York. Not only is she a singer-songwriter with a unique jazz-pop sound, but she is also an accomplished ukulele player and theater creator. Her award-winning ukulele musical, Ease of a Murder, is a comedy set in the Roaring Twenties about four murderers who can’t seem to murder each other. The musical was selected by Emerging Artist Theater’s New Work Series to have its debut performance at NYC’s TADA Theater in March of 2022. Though the musical is still in development, Gwendolyn hopes to have a small off-off Broadway run in the next year. Her ultimate goal is to one day see the musical performed on Broadway!

I’m a Dreamer

I had the chance to listen to I’m a Dreamer on the day of its release, and I can say without a doubt that it’s one of the best albums I’ve heard all year. The title track, “I’m a Dreamer,” is an instant classic. Gwendolyn’s voice is both powerful and vulnerable as she sings about chasing your dreams. And the ukulele accompaniment is the perfect touch. It’s impossible to listen to this song and not feel inspired.

“Are You?” is another stand-out track on the album. It’s a hauntingly beautiful ballad that will stay with you long after it’s over. Gwendolyn’s voice is at its absolute best on this track, hitting all the right notes and conveying the emotion of the lyrics perfectly. If you’re looking for a song to break your heart, “Are You?” is it.

The final two tracks on the album are equally as good as the first two. “You’re the One Who Has My Heart” is a gorgeous love song that will make you believe in romance again. And “Mind Made Up” is an upbeat anthem with a cool old-time feel. It’s about dreaming of your perfect someone.

I’m excited that Gwendolyn has taken some time out to answer some questions for us!

Q: What was your inspiration for your new EP? 

A: The inspiration for the EP was just finally having the money to record one! All the songs are ones I’ve written years ago. I always knew I’m a Dreamer would be the title because that song represents who I am the best. The other three songs seemed to fit the theme of romantic optimism for life and love, so on the EP they went!

Q: Tell us a bit about the recording process.

A: I recorded everything on my own. I did a little pre-production at home to map out the various instruments and vocals I’d be using. Then I spent about 8 hours recording the EP in a studio I rented in 4hr sessions.

Q: What about your album artwork?

A: The artwork I did for cover is something I’m extremely proud of as well! The inspiration was a vintage Alice in Wonderland theme. If you look closely at the clock the hour reads 12 and the minute hand is between the 13 and the 14. The first time I ever stepped in NYC was on 12.13.2015 and then on 12.14.16 I moved to NYC. That’s a little Easter Egg I put in there!

Q: Do you have any upcoming shows or jams you’d like to tell us about?

A: As for shows, I’m playing and teaching at Funky Frets Uke Fest Oct. 7th-9th. A debut release show is in the works for some time this coming spring!
