Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’ is a soulful ballad that tells the story of two people who are unable to be together. The lyrics are written Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas. It was number 58 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Best Songs of 2013 list.
Instant Crush was the first song the boys from Daft Punk ever worked on for their 2013 album Random Access Memories. They were trying to make a record that could live up to all the classic records they loved.
Whilst most songs are written by Daft Punk, they were very open when it came down to working with other artists. This particular track is co-written with Julian Casablancas.
Instant Crush is an 80s style song that combines both electronic and live instruments with the clear and emotive voice of Casablancas. It tells the story of a guy and his main love interest, who was his instant crush.
As usual, Daft Punk keeps information about themselves close to their chest; however knowing that Thomas was in a relationship with French acress, Élodie Bouchez, who also features in the music video, it can be implied that this song was inspired by his experiences. From the lyrics, we know that both people involved are troubled souls; however they depend on each other for happiness and inspiration. There is much debate over whether or not ‘Instant Crush’ is actually about two mannequins falling in love with one another.
I really love the song Instant Crush, and the video is amazing too. I love it because even though the lyrics are sad, I have a really upbeat, positive feeling whenever I listen to it. It’s one of those songs that cheer me up even when it’s raining outside! I hope you enjoy playing this on ukulele!
