Psycho by Red Velvet is my favorite KPOP song, and I’m making my ukulele group play it for our next jam.

What is KPOP?

Kpop stands for “Korean Pop,” and is a genre of music originating from South Korea. It began in the mid to late 1990s, and is distinguished by its distinct style and sound, which draws influence from hip-hop, R&B, jazz, rock and electronica. Kpop usually has an infectious energy with up-tempo beats, catchy hooks and vibrant visuals; often the artist has choreography to accompany the song. Kpop has gained a widespread appeal over the years and is no longer just popular in South Korea – fans across all corners of the globe have embraced it.

Psycho by Red Velvet

The song “Psycho” is a rhythmic and catchy track, with mysterious and intriguing lyrics that depict a passionate but complicated love story. From the outset, this is an R&B track punctuated by elements of pop, trap and future bass, reflecting both Red Velvet’s sultry style and their unpredictable nature. Despite its pensive melodic mood and solemn atmosphere, the piece ultimately exudes vibrancy with its infectious rhythm and playful high notes. The gothic-themed music video further adds to the sophistication of the song by allowing fans to imagine what is happening just beneath the surface. It comes as no surprise that “Psycho” has managed to become one of Red Velvet’s most popular songs; impressive for a group which consistently balances emotive soundscapes with titillating hooks.

This is one of my favorite KPOP songs, and I’m also excited that Just Dance 2023 also features this song. I love dancing to it on weekend mornings, along with the 4 other KPOP songs they have on Just Dance 2023.

Language

The original song was sung in Korean. There was a demo made with English lyrics with producers Cazzi Opeia, Drew Ryan Scott, and singer EJAE, but the band never recorded the song in English. For this ukulele chart, I have the first verse and chorus in anglicized or Romanized Korean, but since I don’t actually speak Korean, I put the rest of the song in English.
